Hammonds Case Study : J&J Maintenance, Inc, Operation of Waste Water Treatment Plant

Hammonds Case Study: At the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, the focus is to prepare our young men and women for military service. To help support the Academy's mission, J&J Maintenance, Inc. was awarded a contract in April 2002 to operate and maintain the Academy's infrastructure including the entire Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Although far away from the academia, J&J's plant foreman at the Waste Water Treatment Plant, Pete Heidebrecht, is focused on the efficient operation of the Academy's wastewater system that includes the chlorination treatment of the plant's effluent. Heidebrecht works to assure that the nearly one million gallons of wastewater that pass through the facility each day is properly disinfected so that it can be reused to irrigate the Academy's athletic fields and grounds.

It's a big job - even bigger when you consider that it was once all done by manual operation. Quite simply, until April 2002, the operation of the WWTP relied on good, old-fashioned manpower to increase or decrease the amount of chlorine needed to treat the wastewater. Prior to April 2002, dry chlorine pucks and water pressure were used to manually chlorinate the water.

However, Heidebrecht needed to eliminate the constant "human" adjustments to the system to make sure it wasn't over or under chlorinating. That led Heidebrecht to The Hammonds Company's line of water chlorination systems. With their ease of use, low maintenance and reliability, Heidebrecht found the solution to his dilemma. And he got the added benefit of cost savings, as the Hammonds unit reduced his chlorine supply to half the amount he previously needed. It is estimated that the chlorinator will pay for itself in approximately eight months through the use of less chlorine.

Although Heidebrecht has had to make adjustments to the Hammonds unit, he says the switch to the Hammonds chlorinator will fully satisfy the plant's needs.

"The Hammonds machinery works great and the distributor has been outstanding at making this thing work for us," says Heidebrecht.
